The stems are used to make sack cloth, paper, yarn, rope, and clothing. Fresh leaves and fruits are eaten like vegetables and when dried the leaves can be added to teas and used as a soup thickener. Jew’s Mallow is also a rich source of Potassium, Iron, Calcium and Vitamins A, B6 and C.

In traditional medicine, this plant is used to treat aches and pains, dysentery, fevers, and tumours.

Other common names include Jute Mallow, Nalta Jute, Bush Okra, Tossa Jute, West African Sorrel and Egyptian Spinach.

Growth

Corchorus olitorius is grown as annual crop and can reach a height of up to 4 metres (15 feet). Jew’s Mallow enjoys moist soils in areas of either full sun or part shade. The ideal temperatures for rapid growth are between 16 and 27 °C (60 and 80 °F). The plant is not frost tolerant and can die in temperatures below 5°C / 41°F.

In commercial farming, when seedlings reach 10-25 cm (4-10 inches) in height they add cow manure, wood ashes or rotted hyacinth as a fertiliser. To acquire regular leaves for cooking at home, succession sowing should be made every two weeks.

HOW TO GROW CORCHORUS OLITORIS (Jew’s Mallow)

Step 1

Soak seeds in hot water (boiled and then left to cool until it can be touched – ideally 70-80°C) for 5 minutes, seeds can be left in water for up to 24 hours. Then sow seeds as mentioned below.

Step 2

Sow seeds directly into pots or a prepared garden bed of a nutrient rich soil, ideally mixed with compost or organic matter. Temperature and humidity levels during germination are important as this is naturally a tropical species.

Be sure to sow well after any threat of frost has passed. If growing in areas that are not tropical, we recommend placing some plastic kitchens wrap over your pots to maintain humidity.

Seeds should be sown roughly 3-5mm deep and at least 5cm apart. If sowing directly into the garden a full sun to part afternoon shade position is best. When germinating in plastic covered pots, these are best grown in a lightly shaded position to avoid overheating, especially during hot summers. Jew’s Mallow is not very fussy about light requirements to germinate.

Generously water with a gentle mist hose or spray bottle to ensure seeds aren’t disturbed.

Step 3

Seeds should germinate after 3-10 days. in ideal temperatures of approximately 22-28°C/75-85°F. Germination will take longer if the conditions are not suitable.

Keep soil moist (not wet and soggy) during the entire germination process as soil drying can kill the seeds embryo.

Step 4

Jew’s Mallow shoots will grow quickly and be ready to harvest/prune for eating once they reach around 30cm high. Plants should regenerate quickly although may die off in cold winters so allow some flowers to go to seed.

In temperate climates Jew’s Mallow is grown as an annual.
