Growth

Cornus florida can grow up to 10 metres tall in warmer regions but in cooler climates is more commonly seen at 4-6 metres tall. Its leaves are ovate in shape and green and turn a deep almost blood red in Autumn before they fall. As mentioned above, the bracts that surround the flowers are the showy part of this tree and are stunning. The bracts are white and look distinctly like 4 petals, they appear ribbed and have an indentation in the apex, giving them a unique and gorgeous ornamental appearance. Bracts are 3.5 cm’s long and 2.5 cm’s wide, the actual flowers in the centre are tiny and green yellow. The red fruit is inedible but is attractive to wildlife.

The Flowering Dogwood often grows as an understory tree and prefers an afternoon shade position in warmer climates.  Suitable for Cold – Sub-Tropical Climates.

FACTS ABOUT CORNUS FLORIDA (Flowering Dogwood)

The Flowering Dogwood is the state flower and tree of Virginia and the state tree of both Missouri and North Carolina.

The Cornus florida ‘rubra’ (pink to red Flowering Dogwood), although growing naturally in the wild, is a rare occurrence. When growing seeds harvested from either the C. florida or the C. florida rubra, the odds of the tree developing into a ‘rubra’ will be the basically the same; about 1 in 100.

HOW TO GROW CORNUS FLORIDA (Flowering Dogwood)

NOTE: Cornus florida seeds will remain dormant until they are cold stratified for a period or 3-4 months.

Step 1

Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours and then immediately follow with cold stratification.

To cold stratify place the seeds into a plastic zip lock bag with a large handful (enough to keep the seeds separated) of moist horticultural sand, a soil sand mix or with moist peat moss. Whatever medium you choose it should be moist not wet. If you can squeeze water from it; it is too wet.

Write the date on the bag, seal and place it into the vegetable crisper section of the fridge for a period of 12-16 weeks.

Step 2

Check weekly to make sure the soil doesn’t dry out and add a light mist if it does. Also check at this time that none of the seeds have begun to sprout, this is possible more so in the later stages of cold stratification – but may not happen too!
If any seeds have sprouted, remove them from the fridge and pot up as in step 3.

Step 3

Once the cold stratification period is complete, remove the seeds from the zip lock bag and sow them each seed about 5 mm deep into small pots of a seed raising mix. Moisten and then move to a position that is well lit but not in direct sunlight – temperatures over 25°C / 77°F can cause the seeds to go back into a dormant state and will need pre-treating in the fridge again!

Keep moist during the entire germination period.

Ideal temperatures for germination are 18-21°C / 64-70°F

Seeds should begin germination after 3-4 weeks.

Step 4

Seedlings can be transplanted from their small pots as necessary. Keep in pots until they are mature and strong enough to plant out and only do so when any chance of frost have definitely passed.

When transplanting choose a location that receives afternoon shade. This species commonly grows as an understory tree, although flowers best with some morning sunshine.

Once established, will survive severe cold and is tolerant to warm, humid climates.

Flowering Dogwoods can begin flowering early trees, this generally begins within 2-4 years.
