Growth

Cucurbita ficifolia is a climbing plant whose main stem can grow from 5-15 metres (16-50 feet) in length, with tendrils that can grow to a similar length as well. They will grow happily along the ground like melons and although the size of the Fig Leaf Gourd sounds huge; unless you want a large plant growing along the ground; they really don’t have to take up as much room as you may think. This species can easily grow up a sturdy trellis and looks amazing growing over an arch, the large fruit hanging down is quite a fantastic sight.

The leaves are fig like, which is where it gets its species name ‘ficifolia’ meaning Fig Leaf in Latin and can grow to around 25 cm’s long & wide. They are edible along with the young stems and the flowers, which are yellow. Its fruit can grow as large as 30 cm’s long by 20cm’s wide, has a marbled white and green skin and is ready for first harvest as early as 40-50 days, up to 6 months for mature fruit.

It enjoys warm temperatures and struggles when temperatures fall below 10°C (28°F), however once established it will cope with very short, mild frost. It is said that this species has successfully been grown in Scotland!

HOW TO GROW CUCURBITA FICIFOLIA (Fig Leaf Gourd)

Start seeds in Spring to Early Summer in temperate regions or indoors 4 weeks before the last frost are expected. In warmer climates they can be started most of the year round, avoiding the rainy season.

Step 1
Sow the seeds approximately 1-2 cm’s deep in a well draining soil rich in compost. Water in and place in a warm, sunny location. Can be planted straight into the garden in a full sun position, space 80 cm’s to 1 meter apart

Step 2
It is important that the soil is kept moist (but not wet and boggy) during germination. If you are not home to monitor this and the weather is very warm, it is best to cover your pot/s with plastic kitchen wrap to maintain moisture and humidity – but this must be placed away from full sun as you can cook your seeds this way! Place in a well lit spot that is out of direct sun in this instance.

Ideal germination temperatures are between 22-28°C/72-83°F

In the right conditions, germination should begin within 1-2 weeks. Will take longer if the temperatures are much cooler.

Step 3
Once established enough to be planted out pick a well draining spot that has full sun and transplant into the ground once daytime soil temperatures are consistently above 15°C (59°F).

If growing the Fig Leaf Gourd as a climbing plant, it will require a trellis or support to climb up. The fruits when ripe can weigh around 5 kilograms each, so it is important that this support is sturdy/strong.

Will need regular watering during warmer times of the year and also during flowering & fruiting periods.

Fruit is ready for juvenile harvesting around 40-50 days but mature fruit can take around 6 months.
