Red Bolivian Fuchsia suits shady or part-shade positions in the garden and is pretty low-maintenance once established. The flowers bloom all year round in Sub-Tropical climates that are similar to their native habitat. Plants can be damaged if temperatures exceed 40 °C / 104 °F or subjected to frost for long periods.

Growth

Fuchsia boliviana is an evergreen, sometimes deciduous flowering shrub that reaches heights of up to 4 metres (14 feet). Red Bolivian Fuchsia enjoys a humus-rich soil and moist shady positions where they can be protected from the hot summer sun. Seeds have a high germination rate and young seedlings grow quickly when daytime temperatures remain consistent between 18-25°C/65-80°F. The ideal range in Australia would be between the Sunshine Coast in Queensland to Port Macquarie, New South Wales.

Though some suggest the plant is frost tender, it simply dies off in prolonged cold temperatures and grows back in Spring. So climates such as Sydney and Melbourne are fine once the plant is established, usually in their second growing season. Places such as Canberra and Hobart maybe too cold during winter and may have better success growing indoors as a houseplant.

During extremely hot summer days, Red Bolivian Fuchsia plants can be completely killed off. There isn’t a place in Australia that is immune to those and so plant in full sun with extreme caution. Ideally, keep them covered with some shade (especially the afternoon sun) or grow them in pots so that they can be moved as necessary.

HOW TO GROW FUCHSIA BOLIVIANA (Red Bolivian Fuchsia)

Step 1

Fill small to medium pots with a well draining seed raising soil mix, do not compress the soil. Surface sow the seeds (one or two seeds per pot to avoid root tangling later on) and cover with a sprinkle of further soil to just cover the seeds lightly. A bit of light is needed to induce germination.

Moisten the soil but do not over water and keep this way for the entire germination process.

Place them in a warm, bright location that is not in direct sunlight.

Ideal temperature for germination is 18-25°C/65-80°F

Seeds should take 3-6 weeks to germinate in ideal conditions.

Step 2

Transplant as necessary once the plants start to become root bound. Try to keep the soil ball around the roots intact while transplanting. Keep moist most of the time.

If wanting to plant out into the garden choose a spot that does not get full strong afternoon sun, Bolivian Fuchsia prefers filtered light or even shade. Morning sun and filtered all day light under the canopy of trees will be fine. Wait until after any frosts from winter have passed before planting out.

In temperate or cold climates such as Britain, gardeners often dig them out, pot them and keep them in the greenhouse until spring.

In warmer climates, plant them in the shade or semi-shade as hot, direct sunlight can cause serious damage.

Step 3

Protect through first winter and once established will survive some frost, and even snow but will die off (become deciduous in colder climates) before returning in spring.

Fuchsia isn’t drought hardy and requires a regular watering except during winter. Can also be grown indoors where they will achieve blooms on a regular basis.

Additional water and fertiliser advised during flowering.

Fuchsias can take 12-18 months to flower and then can bloom constantly year round in sub-tropical climates.
