Also commonly known as the Elephant Apple Tree and is the only species under the genus Limonia.

Wood Apple trees generally take around 10-15 years from seed to start producing fruit. In the meantime, they make a beautiful shade tree in warmer climates.

Growth

Limonia acidissima is a deciduous tree that reaches heights of up to 9 metres (30 feet). The Wood Apple is suitable for climates where temperatures rarely dip below 12°C / 53°F making them difficult to grow south of Brisbane. They prefer warm, humid and moist conditions and go dormant during even the mildest of winters. In their native regions, Wood Apples grow quickly during the wet, hot seasons.

Leaves of the Wood Apple are pinnate with 5-7 leaflets, each roughly 30mm long. When crushed they leave a citrus scent. White or sometimes light red flowers occur during the dry winters and have five petals. Fruits are berries that range from 5-9 cm in diameter and are either sweet or sour depending on when they are picked. Their rinds appear greenish-brown and is hard to crack open. The flesh is sticky with a brown pulp.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW LIMONIA ACIDISSIMA (Wood Apple)

Step 1

Place seeds in a waterproof container and boil the kettle. Leave the water in the kettle for ten minutes and then pour over the seeds. Let them soak for 24 hours.

Step 2

Sow seeds into moist well draining soil approximately 5-10mm deep.

Keep soil/medium moist at all times during germination, NOT wet!

Keep warm or indoors for entire germination process especially if starting during winter!

The ideal temperature for germinating Wood Apple seeds is between 20-25°C / 68°C-77°F.

Seeds should germinate after 3-4 weeks if ideal conditions are maintained.

Step 3

Once sprouted, move pots to sunny position and maintain warm temperatures.

Transplant as required when 2-3 true leaves have developed. Keep in pot sheltered or inside until after first winter.

Step 4

Transplant to final position in full sun after winter. Once established, will survive brief periods below 10°C/50°F but will require protection such as mulching the base. They are also quite drought tolerant.

Wood Apples prefer and are native to monsoon climate areas but also need a period of dry weather to produce fruit.

It can take up to 15 years before the Wood Apple may bear fruit.
