Growth

Magnolia liliiflora is a small flowering tree that reaches a short height of around 4 metres (14 feet) and a width of about the same. Trees grow relatively quickly and adapt well to colder climates. In its native climate, temperatures often fall to a chilly -20°C / -4°F but key to their survival is their positioning. Usually found growing on the sides of small mountains and large hills, the Purple Magnolia tolerates the cold conditions when well sheltered by other trees. In cultivation, they are often grown as ornamentals or feature trees so in cold climates, so try to position them where they won’t get too much wind.

While still young the seedlings will need some protection from frost for their first two winters. As a deciduous species, they will loose all their leaves during winter as a method of protecting themselves. Once established they tolerate drought but an increase of water around the start of Spring helps to improve the number and duration of the two-toned flowers. Flowering begins when the trees reach a height of around 1 metre (3 feet).

The trees can be weakened by scales insects. Treating them with herbicides is one way of combating the problem. Our recommendation is to grow smaller plants nearby that attract ladybirds who love to eat scale insects and will fix the problem organically. Some of the these plants include useful herbs such as Coriander, Fennel and Dill.

FACTS ABOUT MAGNOLIA LILIIFLORA (Purple Magnolia)

This species was introduced to the United States from Japan in 1861 and is sometimes mistakenly called the Japanese Magnolia.

Traditionally, the flowers and unopened flower buds have been used medicinally, primarily for sinusitis, allergic rhinitis and colds with a runny nose.

HOW TO GROW MAGNOLIA LILIIFLORA (Purple Magnolia)

Step 1

Soak your seeds in a container of water (room temperature) for at least 24 hours. They can be left in water for a couple of days but be sure to change the water every 24 hours to avoid bacteria building up.

Step 2

Magnolia seeds require varying periods of stratification for them to germinate.  Place Purple Magnolia seeds into a plastic zip-lock bag with enough moist sand to cover the seeds without losing them in it.

Label it with the date and place into the fridge for around 2 months.

Step 3

Prepare small pots with a moist soil mixture that contains at least some sand or perlite to ensure the medium drains well.

Then sow one seed per pot around 5mm deep.

Moisten the soil mixture and place the pots into a warm, sunny location. Do not let the soil (medium) dry out at any stage as the seeds embryo will die off quickly but also do not keep the soil too wet as this may rot the seeds. Including sand in the mixture is a key component to not only allowing for drainage but helps to wear the outer layer of the seed.

The ideal temperature for germinating Purple Magnolia seeds is a very warm 21-24°C / 70-75°F. This may require a heat mat or a greenhouse during Spring which is when we have achieved success here in Melbourne.

Allow 4-8 weeks to see seedlings sprout. The better the conditions, the faster the germination – germination will be slower in cooler temperatures.

Step 4

Transplant when plants reach 10-15cm in height and after the last frost. They prefer a position of full sun but seedlings will appreciate some shade for the first couple of summers.

Step 5

Keep base mulched at the base for winter as temperatures below 5°C / 41°F can cause serious damage to young seedlings. After their first full winter they should be established enough to tolerate temperatures as low as -10°C / 14°F.

Once established they will require regular water and a bit extra when flowering.

Purple Magnolia Trees take 3-4 years to begin flowering.
