Growth

Mimusops elengi is a medium-sized evergreen tree that grows to a height of up to 15 m (49ft) and a width of up to 10 m (33ft). It is fast-growing in tropical regions that receive high annual rainfalls.

Young Spanish Cherry trees thrive in shaded locations with morning sun but as they mature prefer a position in full sun. Ideally, they are grown in containers for the first few years so that they can be relocated to a permanent position once developed.

Finding ideal soil conditions for the Spanish Cherry is easy. They tolerate boggy moist soils, salty marshes and don’t mind sandy mixtures either.

In good growing conditions, the Spanish Cherry can start to flower in around 3-4 years.

FACTS ABOUT MIMUSOPS ELENGI (Spanish Cherry)

Throughout tropical regions, the Spanish Cherry tree is commonly used as a street tree due to the valuable heavy shade it provides. In areas of high annual rainfall, once established, the trees are low maintenance, fast growing and produce a beautiful fragrance during Spring.

In India the leaves, bark and flowers are used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat toothaches, snake-bites and to assist with wounds, eczema and headaches.

An essential oil is produced from the bark, flowers as pillow fillers, young sprouts as toothbrushes, the seeds are worn as necklaces and the wood is prized for its hard durability and resistance to termites.

HOW TO GROW MIMUSOPS ELENGI (Spanish Cherry)

Note: It is highly recommended that Spanish Cherry trees be grown in Sub-Tropical and Tropical climates only. Growing in temperate climates requires more maintenance, results in less fruit and flowers and can be damaged during surprise frosts.

Step 1

Start by scarifying the hard outer layer of the seed by either rubbing gently against rough concrete or with a soft sandpaper. Ensure the seeds shell has been slightly breached.

Step 2

Then soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, changing the water after 12 hours.

Step 3

After soaking, sow each seed about 10mm deep into small individual pots of garden soil. Moisten and then move into a shady, warm location. Keep moist during entire germination process and use a heat mat if required to keep the temperature between 20 and 25°C (68-77°F).

Average germination is around 6-8 weeks but can range from 3-12 weeks.

Step 4

Once sprouted, position the seedlings to receive gentle morning sun and transfer to larger pots as they grow and become root bound. As younger trees can wilt in hot afternoon sunshine it is better to keep them in containers until after the first hot summer.

And then during the Autumn following their first Summer, transplant the trees into a final position that receives sunshine all day.

Step 5

Once the trees have matured enough to be transplanted into their final position, they won’t require much watering in tropical climates. In regions where temperatures may drop below 5°C (41°F), mulching the base of the tree can protect the roots from damage.

Spanish Cherry trees are fast growing and usually take between 3-4 years to reach the flowering and fruiting stages.
