Growth

Wild Italian Oregano is a perennial herb that grows no higher than 40cm (16 inches) by around 50cm (20 inches) in width. Unlike normal Oregano which can tolerate frosts and freezing temperatures, the Wild Italian Oregano requires temperatures to remain above 8°C / 45°F.

In colder climates, it is recommended to grow this variety in containers so that they can be moved for protection during cold spells or if there is a potential for frost.

Wild Italian Oregano loves warmer climates and can be ready to harvest in 90-100 days.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW ORIGANUM VULGARE (Wild Italian Oregano)

 

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 18-25°C / 65-77°F. Germination can take between 8-14 days.

Step 2

It is recommended to grow Wild Italian Oregano seedlings in pots as they can be become invasive.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 15°C/59°F.

Keep well-watered but wet for the first week after transplanting.

Step 3

The final position should be in full sun or semi-shade. Finish transplanting by watering in the seedlings.

Once established, plants can tolerate cold temperatures down to -8°C/45°F.

The leaves of Wild Italian Oregano can be ready to harvest in between 90-100 days from sowing.
