Growth

Peltophorum pterocarpum is a fast growing deciduous tree that grows to a maximum height of 25 metres (82 feet) and a width of 15 metres (49 feet). In their native tropical habitat, Yellow Poinciana trees tolerate poor soils and low rainfall but do not tolerate frost. They grow well in temperatures that range from 15-35°C / 59-95°F but once established can withstand short periods below 5°C / 41°F.

In colder climates, Yellow Poincianas seedlings are best grown in containers where they can be protected from imminent cold spells until they are bigger.

As part of the legume family, the fallen deciduous leaves can be used as a fertiliser for other plants to increase their access to nitrogen. In ideal conditions, the Yellow Poinciana tree can begin flowering in around 4-5 years.

FACTS ABOUT PELTOPHORUM PTEROCARPUM (Yellow Poinciana)

The wood from a Peltophorum pterocarpum tree is used in cabinet making, wood tools and firewood while the foliage is fed to livestock or added to compost piles for fertiliser.

In traditional medicine, Yellow Poincianas have been used to cure or relieve intestinal disorders, sprains, bruises and muscular pains.

The trees have been grown alternately in India with both the Royal Poinciana (Delonix regia) and the Jacaranda tree (Jacaranda mimosifolia) to provide stunning colour contrasts with both the red and purple.

HOW TO GROW PELTOPHORUM PTEROCARPUM (Yellow Poinciana)

Step 1

Start by scarifying the seeds by either scratching them with sandpaper or gently against rough concrete.

Step 2

Then soak the scarified seeds in warm water for 48 hours, changing the water every 12 hours to avoid excessive bacteria growth.

Step 3

After soaking, sow the seeds 5mm deep in small pots of a nutrient-rich and well-draining soil. Moisten lightly and cover with plastic film or leave in a location where the temperature can remain steady at between 18-25°C / 65-77°F. A heat mat or greenhouse may be required.

Check every few days to ensure that the soil hasn’t dried out and use a misting spray to apply moisture evenly and to avoid unsettling the seed/s.

Yellow Poinciana seeds usually germinate in between 4-6 weeks but can also take several months, especially if temperatures aren’t consistent.

Step 4

Once seedlings appear remove plastic and/or move them into a location where they will get consistent soft sunlight, such as the morning sun.

Keep them protected until after their first winter. Once established, plants won’t require much water but will require a position that gives them at least 6 hours of sunlight each day.

Yellow Poinciana trees can begin flowering from seed in between 4-5 years.
