Growth

Petroselinum crispum is a biennial herb plant that grows to a compact height of 35cm (14 inches) and is easy to grow in a wide range of soils and temperatures. In colder climates where it may frost, Parsley will need protection as even adult plants can suffer damage at less than 5°C/41°F.

In warmer climates, Parsley grows as an annual herb and will drop its seeds prior to the following Spring. As a biennial in cooler climates, the first year is dedicated to forming rosettes of tripinnate leaves that can grow to 25cm (10 inches) long. During the second year, the plants develop a flowering stem that can reach 75cm (30 inches) tall, which proceeds small yellowish-green flowers on umbels which are highly attractive to many different insects.

Growing Parsley near many different types of vegetables will assist in deterring and eliminating common pests that wish to reduce your harvest. When growing from seeds, Parsley leaves are ready to harvest in around 80-90 days.

FACTS ABOUT PETROSELINUM CRISPUM (Parsley Triple Curled)

First introduced to Britain in 1548, Petroselinum crispum grew in popularity in Europe throughout the Middle Ages. It is believed that Parsley originated in Sardinia, Italy where historic records place cultivation back to the 3rd century BC.

Parsley is the main ingredient in the Italian condiment, salsa verde, where it is mixed with capers, anchovies, garlic and bread before being soaked in vinegar. And Parsley is also the key ingredient in several Middle Eastern salads such as the Lebanese tabbouleh and is often mixed with chickpeas to make falafels.

The most common use of Parsley as a medicinal herb is as a diuretic where it can be useful in ridding the body of kidney stones and as a general detoxifier. For more information about the medicinal properties of Parsley please click here.

Parsley is an amazing companion plant for so many commonly grown vegetables. In many cases, Parsley attracts the perfect predators that eat so many unwanted feeders such as aphids, earworms and onion maggots to name a few. More information on the Parsley’s best companion plants can be found here.

HOW TO GROW PETROSELINUM CRISPUM (Parsley Triple Curled)

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal. Cover very lightly so the seeds are exposed to sunlight as it is necessary for them to germinate.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 10-30°C / 50-86°F. Germination can take between 14-28 days.

Step 2

It is recommended to grow Parsley in pots to provide protection from frost in cooler climates or to plant in garden beds to use as a companion plant for other vegetables.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 10°C/50°F.

Keep well-watered but wet for the first week after transplanting.

Step 3

The final position should be in full sun or semi-shade.

Even once established, Parsley will only tolerate cold temperatures down to 5°C/41°F and can suffer damage during frosts.

The leaves of Parsley Triple Curled can be harvested in around 80-90 days but the seeds will depend on the climate. In temperate climates, seeding will take on average 18-20 months while in warmer climates Parsley will grow as an annual and may reseed within 12 months.
