Growth

Philodendron lundii is a fast-growing tropical evergreen plant that grows to a maximum size of around 4 metres (14 feet) by 1.5 metres (5 feet). The natural habitat of Dwarf Tree Philodendrons is moist, tropical and humid but also sheltered from the sun by larger forest canopy trees.

In climates where the temperatures rarely drop below 10°C / 50°F, the mature plants can be grown outdoors in shady or part-shady locations. In cooler climates, Dwarf Tree Philodendrons are grown indoors as an ornamental where their environment is easier to control.

HOW TO GROW PHILODENDRON LUNDII (Dwarf Tree Philodendron)

Step 1

Soak seeds in cool to warm water for up to 24 hours. To avoid an excess of bacteria, change the water after 12 hours.

Step 2

Sow seeds directly onto the surface of a seed raising mix or peat moss and gently press to ensure the seed makes good contact with the soil. Cover lightly and moisten gently with a misting spray to ensure the seeds remain secure.

The seeds must always stay moist as drying out of the medium (peat/soil) will kill the seeds embryo quite quickly once germination inside the seed has begun.

Dwarf Tree Philodendrons require warm temperatures of between 15°C to 25°C / 59 to 77°F to germinate

A warm greenhouse, a heat mat or covering the container with a plastic film can help to increase and maintain a consistently warm temperature.

Leave the container/s in a bright location but not exposed to any direct sunlight throughout germination which can take around 3-4 weeks.

Step 3

Once seedlings emerge, they can be gradually exposed to some sunlight. Reduce watering until only when the surface soil is completely dry.

If leaves wilt or become yellow it is often because the soil has become waterlogged.

Step 4

Regularly increase the size of the pot, upgrading every 2-3 years to provide more space for the roots and to check if the soil has become too compacted overtime.

Dwarf Tree Philodendrons start to flower and produce fruit in their native habitat in around 15-20 years but will rarely do so when grown indoors.
