Growth

Pinus mugo is a short conifer species that grows to a maximum height of 5 metres (16 feet) but spreads wider to as much as 8 metres (26 feet). The Mountain Pine is highly sought after for revegetation projects due to its ease of transplanting, low-maintenance and ability to tolerate boggy and clayish soils.

It’s a slow growing conifer that is ideal for use as a border, screen, feature tree and unlike most conifers can tolerate a coastal, salty location. Leaves are dark green needles in pairs and are lightly fragrant. Pinus mugo enjoys a position in full sun when transplanting and is drought tolerant once established.

HOW TO GROW PINUS MUGO (MOUNTAIN PINE)

Step 1

Soak seeds for 24 hours in water. Place the seeds into a plastic zip-lock with a tablespoon of moistened soil, soil should not be wet – if you can squeeze water out of the soil, it is too wet. Write the date and place bag into the fridge for 4 weeks.

After 2 weeks, check every few days for rare sprouting seeds. Sow any sprouts immediately.

Note: You can skip the stratification with Mountain Pine after soaking but will generally achieve a much lower germination rate.

Step 2

After, sow each seed about 3mm deep into seed trays or small pots of garden soil. Moisten and then move into a well-lit position out of direct sunlight. Keep moist during entire germination process.

Average germination begins around 3-4 weeks in ideal conditions.

Step 3

If necessary, transplant seedlings once they are an inch tall. If in pots, you can leave them until they begin to become root bound.

Step 4

Once strong enough transplant to final position after last frosts have passed. Once established, Mountain Pine trees will survive severe cold and not require much watering until warm weather begins.

Mountain Pine trees can take between 20-25 years to reach maturity.
