Growth

Pittosporum tenuifolium is an evergreen tree that reaches heights of up to 10 metres (30 feet) and around 5 metres wide (15 feet). Silver Sheen is fast growing for a hedge and grows in a compact leafy style that provides great coverage and privacy. Some suggest the trees can grow from 50cm in height to 3 metres (10 feet) within five years.

The leaves are small, rarely longer than 5cm (2 inches) and can range from oval to almost circular. Younger leaves are covered in fine hairs, which sheds as they age into a surface that is smooth and glossy to the touch.

Flowering begins in late Spring and will often emit a fragrance in the evening. Once pollinated, the inedible fruit starts to appear in late summer.

FACTS ABOUT PITTOSPORUM TENUIFOLIUM (Silver Sheen)

Silver Sheen produces small, dark, reddish-purple flowers that generally go unnoticed and are scented only at night.

The fresh gum resin is combined with the thickened juice of pūhā (sow thistle) and chewed as a cure for bad breath or sore gums. One source suggests the Silver Sheen plant is also used to treat eczema and other skin diseases.

There are historical reports of Māori spreading branches of Kōhūhū on the floor of guesthouses for their fragrance. A sprig of Kōhūhū was commonly used by tohunga in ceremonial proceedings such as the birth of a child.

HOW TO GROW PITTOSPORUM TENUIFOLIUM (Silver Sheen)

Step 1

Half fill a plastic zip-lock bag with a pre-moistened sand, (make sure the sand is not too wet – if you can squeeze water out of it with your hand, it is too wet!), write the date on the bag, mix in the seeds loosely and place bag into the fridge for 4 weeks.

This process is called ‘cold stratification’ and is done to trick the seeds into believing they are going through a cold winter as they would in their natural habitat.

The seeds may not germinate if they have not been put through this process or germination rates will be lower and/or can take much longer.

Step 2

After 4 weeks, sow each seed about 2mm deep into seed trays or small pots of seed raising soil. Moisten with a spray bottle to avoid over watering and then move into a well-lit position that is not in direct sunlight. A well-lit location is important but be careful to ensure the soil doesn’t dry out.

Optimal temperature for germination can range between of 10-20°C/50-70°F is acceptable.

Temperatures above 27°C/80°C can cause seeds to go back into a dormant state which would mean starting the again from Step 1. So if starting Silver Sheen seeds during summer, keep them in a location where they won’t get too hot.

You can cover tray with plastic wrap to keep warmth and moisture inside the tray. Seeds should start to germinate between 4-6 weeks and can be sporadic, so don’t give up on any that haven’t sprouted until after 12 weeks!

Step 3

Once seedlings are looking strong, they can be moved to a sunnier location but be careful doing this in warmer months. If you need to do this, do it gradually so that seedlings have the time to adjust.

Seedlings can be transplanted once they reach 10cm or 4 inches in height into a good quality, nutrient rich soil.

Keep in a small-medium pot until after first winter, so they can be moved inside if needed to protect them from frost and cold winds at this time.

Seedlings can be fertilised monthly with a weak organic fertiliser.

Step 4

Transplant to final position after last frost has passed, when the plants are between 1-2 years old. If planting more than 1, space 1m apart/3 feet apart.

Additional water advised when flowering or fruiting which is usually around early to mid-summer.

Silver Sheen trees usually start to mature in between 8-10 years.
