Growth

Prunella vulgaris is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows to a compact height of 30cm (12 inches) tall by 25cm (10 inches) wide. Self Heal grows wild on roadsides, woodland edges and where soils are disturbed and low in nutrients. Though a temperate plant that can tolerate frost, it is susceptible to damage if exposed to temperatures below -5°C / 23°F.

Self Heal leaves are lance-shaped and serrated with a reddish tip and grow in opposite pairs down the main stem. The flowers are shaped like a caveman’s club, with two leaves below that resemble a collar. Purple is the predominant colour but shades of pink and blue are possible. The more likely time of year to flower is during Summer but that can depend on the climate.

When grown from seed in ideal conditions, Self Heal plants can start being harvested from around 60-70 days.

HOW TO GROW PRUNELLA VULGARIS (Self Heal)

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 15-22°C / 62-72°F. Germination can take between 14-21 days.

Step 2

Once seedlings reach a height of around 10cm (4 inches) they can be transplanted into the ground if all frost has passed. Self Heal can also be used as a groundcover.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 5°C/41°F.

Keep well-watered but wet for the first week after transplanting.

Step 3

The final position should be in full sun or semi-shade. Finish transplanting by watering in the seedlings.

Once established, plants can tolerate cold temperatures down to -5°C/23°F.

Self Heal plants can be ready to harvest in between 60-70 days from sowing.
