Psidium guajava is also commonly referred to as the Common Guava, Lemon Guava and Apple Guava. Unfortunately, the Yellow Guava often escapes from cultivation and is considered a noxious weed in many tropical regions.

Growth

Psidium guajava is a fruiting evergreen tree that grows to a height of up to 6 metres (20 feet) and a width of up to 4 metres (13 feet). Less cold tolerant than its relative, the Strawberry Guava, the Yellow Guava enjoys warm, humid climates that provide consistent rain. In tropical climates, the tree will flower all year round and continually produce fruits.

When established, the Yellow Guava can withstand temperatures as low as 0°C / 32°F but not for long periods. Consistent temperatures above 15°C / 59°F are required for fruit to set, as is consistent rain, but a dry period is required to avoid spoilage during ripening.

Compared to most tropical plants, Psidium guajava is relatively drought tolerant but still requires at least 1000mm (40 inches) per year.

In good conditions, Yellow Guavas can start flowering in around two years but more often than not it takes 4-5 years for the tree to begin fruiting. Trees around five years can produce up to 40kg per year while the peak ages of 7-10 years can bring 50-70kg.

FACTS ABOUT PSIDIUM GUAJAVA (Yellow Guava)

The wood of a Guava tree is commonly used in Hawaii to smoke meat. It is resistant to insects and fungal attacks and is used in Nigeria to build roof trusses.

Psidium guajava is used in traditional medicine throughout much of Latin America to treat inflammation, hypertension, wounds, pain relief, fevers, ulcers and diabetes.

As well as the leaves being used as fodder for livestock, the plant is also growing in popularity for use in shampoos due to its fragrant scent.

HOW TO GROW PSIDIUM GUAJAVA (Yellow Guava)

Step 1

Start by soaking the seeds in cold water for 10 minutes.

Then fill small pots of around 10cm (4 inches) wide with a soil that will allow for good drainage and moisten to ensure it is damp.

Sow 2-3 seeds per pot by gently pressing them into the surface and then covering them with a thin layer of soil. Lightly mist to ensure the seeds are not disturbed.

Then leave the pot/s in a location where they are not exposed to direct sunlight but can still achieve a consistent temperature of 20-30°C (68-86°F). Temperatures outside this range will slow or inhibit germination.

Covering the pot with cling wrap and holding it with a rubber band or using a heat mat is recommended if temperatures will be regularly below 20°C/68°F.

Step 2

Check soil regularly to ensure it doesn’t dry out. Add water when the soil surface is dry. Misting ensures the seeds aren’t disturbed and won’t sink too far down in the soil.

Seeds can be erratic at germinating but following the instructions above should take between in 4-6 weeks.

Step 3

Once the first set of leaves have properly developed, seedlings can be moved to where they will receive soft sunlight, such as the first few hours in the morning.

Gradually increase the number of hours the seedlings are exposed to sunlight to strengthen their stems and acclimatise to their conditions.

Keep seedlings indoors if temperatures, even overnight, are forecast to drop below 10°C (50°F).

Transplant seedlings when 10-15cm (4-6 inches) in height and after all potential frost has passed. Keep young seedlings well watered and protected from hot sun exposure over summer.

Step 4

In warmer climates, transplant to final position after the first full winter. Keep well watered during hot spells and don’t water during periods of heavy rain.

Once established will become a prolific provider of guavas and in tropical conditions can yield fruit all year round.

In temperate regions, plants will die off if left outside during winter. They can be kept as perennials if protected from frost and low temperatures over winter, such as in a greenhouse or in pots that can be moved.

Yellow Guava trees can take between 4-5 years to begin fruiting.
