Growth

Rhaphidophora decursiva is a climbing perennial evergreen that grows to a maximum height of 18 metres (60 feet) in its natural habitat but is a more compact 2 metres (7 feet) when grown indoors. Creeping Philodendron thrives in warm and humid conditions with a soil that is well draining but retains a little bit of moisture.

Best results are achieved when the plants are provided a trellis or support structure to climb on but isn’t necessary for the first growing season. Creeping Philodendron’s do poorly in cold temperatures and will suffer damage if exposed to temperatures less than 10°C / 50°F.

If exposed to harsh direct sunlight the leaves can be burned and so it is recommended to position the plant where they receive the softer morning sun or plenty of bright but indirect sunlight.

FACTS ABOUT RHAPHIDOPHORA DECURSIVA (Creeping Philodendron)

The whole plant of Rhaphidophora decursiva is toxic to humans and pets and should not be consumed.

Creeping Philodendrons are also useful at purifying toxins from the air.

Some experts suggest repotting Creeping Philodendrons once a year to allow the roots more space to grow and to loosen up the soil which can sometimes become too compacted.

HOW TO GROW RHAPHIDOPHORA DECURSIVA (Creeping Philodendron)

Step 1

Soak seeds in cool to warm water for up to 24 hours. To avoid an excess of bacteria, change the water after 12 hours.

Step 2

Sow seeds directly onto the surface of a seed raising mix or peat moss and gently press to ensure the seed makes good contact with the soil. Cover lightly and moisten gently with a misting spray to ensure the seeds remain secure.

These seeds must always stay moist as drying out of the medium (peat/soil) will kill the seeds embryo quite quickly once germination inside the seed has begun.

Creeping Philodendrons require quite warm temperatures to germinate and need to be kept at between 20°C to 25°C / 68 to 77°F.

A warm greenhouse, a heat mat or covering the container with a plastic film can help to increase and maintain a consistently warm temperature.

Leave the container/s in a bright location but not exposed to any direct sunlight throughout germination which can take around 3-4 weeks.

Step 3

Once seedlings emerge, they can be gradually exposed to some sunlight. Reduce watering until only when the surface soil is completely dry.

If leaves wilt or become yellow it is often because the soil has become waterlogged.

Step 4

Regularly increase the size of the pot, upgrading every year if possible and ensure to provide some form of climbing structure or trellis.

Creeping Philodendrons can reach maturity in 2-4 years but will rarely flower or fruit when grown indoors.
