The Beefsteak Tomato is best known for its large size, thick fleshy skin, and juicy, superior flavour. A big favourite for home gardeners due to all the above and to the fact that this variety is generally not available at supermarkets.

There have been several varieties bred from the Beefsteak since the 1800’s, some still old heirloom/heritage and of course some hybrids.

Growth

The Beefsteak Tomato is a larger growing plant than most other tomatoes and can reach up to approximately 1.8m (6 feet). This variety is an indeterminate climbing one, so it is best to provide some lattice, stakes or other form of support and train/tie the plant as it grows. Keep in mind the fruit can grow up to around 15cm (6 inches) in diameter, so will be a heavy burden for the branches; making a good support system a must.
