This heirloom variety is a reliable producer with large, juicy, multipurpose tomatoes that are suitable for salads, sandwiches, sauces & salsa’s etc. The plant is indeterminate, which means it will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the entire growing season.

It’s not uncommon for people to believe that the Grosse Lisse tomato in an Australian heirloom variety, probably because it has been a favourite here for as long as most can remember. However, the variety was developed in the US in the 1860’s and was possibly introduced here by early settlers.

Growth

The Grosse Lisse Tomato plant can reach up to 1.8m (6 feet) and 1 metre (3 feet) wide. This variety is an indeterminate climbing one, so it is best to provide some lattice, stakes or other form of support and train/tie the plant as it grows. This variety will continue to flower and produce fruit during the entire growing season, so it’s a very good producer.

Average fruit size is approximately 200gms, one plant can produce around 14-18 kilograms (30-40 pounds) of fruit. The Gross Lisse tomato bursts with flavour and has certainly earned its place as a backyard favourite.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW SOLANUM LYCOPERSICUM (Tomato – Grosse Lisse)

 

NOTE: In cool & temperate regions it is best to start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks prior to appropriate weather or move them inside at night-time if daytime weather is ok but nights are cool. This way they can be a decent sized plant by the time they are ready to go outdoors, and you will get the most fruit out of the growing season.

Sowing Season by Climate:
Cold – Early Spring to Early Summer
Temperate Late Winter to Early Summer
Sub-Tropical – Late Winter to Mid-Autumn
Tropical – Late Summer to Late Winter

Germination Temperatures: Ideally daytime 20-25°C / 68-77°F & night-time 15-20°C / 59-68°F. Tomato germination rates will decline with daytime temperatures under 15°C/68°F or over 30°C/95°F.
Start: Either straight into the garden and thin out or in small pots/trays to be transplanted later. Start indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting if preferred. Can also be kept in pots.
Soil: Moist, well-draining, compost rich soil.
Sow: 5mm deep.
