Growth

Withania somnifera is an annual or perennial herbaceous plant that grows to a compact height of 120cm (4 feet) tall by 100cm (3 feet) wide. Indian Ginseng is part of the Tomato and Capsicum family and follow similar growing traits. Plants do well as perennials in warm climates but can be grown as an annual in temperate climates.

Seeds are best sown after the last frost when day time temperatures exceed 15°C / 62°F or all year round in warmer climates. The primary reason for growing Indian Ginseng is for the roots which can be harvested in as little as 130-150 days which fits into the temperate calendar from Spring to Autumn.

FACTS ABOUT WITHANIA SOMNIFERA (Indian Ginseng)

The Latin species name, somnifera translates to sleep-inducing which is one of the plants primary benefits. The sanskrit-derived term of Ashwagandha is a combination made from ashva meaning horse and gandha meaning smell as the root has a strong horse-like odor.

Leaves of Indian Ginseng are used as an insect repellent, the fruits are rich in saponins and are sometimes used as a soap substitute while the root is used in Africa to ward off large predators such as lions and tigers.

A poultice can be made and applied to boils, wounds and muscle swellings and is used to treat bed sores.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW WITHANIA SOMNIFERA (Indian Ginseng)

Step 1

Soak the seeds for around ten minutes in clean, room temperature water. Then sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. Cover very lightly as the seeds require light to germinate.

Moisten the soil gently and leave the pots in a bright location where they can receive soft sunlight such as the morning sun.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 15-30°C / 62-85°F. Germination can take between 5-21 days. Seeds can achieve germination in 5-7 days if kept moist and consistently at 25°C / 77°F.

Step 2

After germination, gradually increase the number of exposed hours to sunlight to improve seedling strength.

Once seedlings reach a height of around 10cm (4 inches) they can be transplanted into the ground.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 15°C/62°F.

In warmer climates, choose a location that provides full sun during the morning but is shaded from hot summer afternoon sunshine.

Step 3

The final position should be in full sun or semi-shade. Even once established, plants can’t tolerate cold temperatures below 10°C/50°F.

Indian Ginseng roots can be ready to harvest in between 130-150 days from sowing.
