Artemisia dracunculoides – Russian Tarragon (Organic)

$3.00$4.00

Russian Tarragon ( Artemisia dracunculoides ) is a perennial culinary herb which grows wild to 1 metre tall in its native regions of Russia and North America. It is less popular than the French Tarragon (which cannot be grown from seed), but is still widely used in dishes across Hungary, Georgia and many other eastern European countries.

The Russian variety although not as strong in flavour, is a much hardier plant than the French variety, so is easier to grow and care for … and certainly easier to get hold of!

Many people prefer the flavour of the Russian Tarragon because it is not as strong as the French, especially if they are not a fan of Anise!

Other common names for Russian Tarragon are False Tarragon and Dragon Wormwood.

Growth

Artemisia dracunculoides is a herbaceous plant that grows to around 1.2 metres tall and ½ a metre wide. The leaves are long and thin, light green colour and get to around 8 cm’s in length, the small flowers of this species are light yellow.  For culinary purposes, this plant has better flavour if it is grown in drier, almost neglected conditions, it is for this reason it possibly isn’t suitable in tropical regions. Use the leaves when they are freshly harvested as the flavour is lost in storage, you will need to use a little more than you would of the French variety as it is nowhere near as strong.

There are a couple of differences that distinguish this species from the French variety, firstly the French Tarragon has darker green leaves, that are thinner and a little spikier and secondly it doesn’t flower (or very rarely).

Harvest:
Leaves and flowers can be harvested from around 18 months.

Step 1

Surface sow seeds into pots or tray filled with a moistened well-draining soil mix and cover with 1-2 mm of further soil. Moisten this top layer with a spray bottle to avoid disturbing the tiny seeds and move to a warm, well-lit location, preferably away from full sun.

Soil must be kept moist (not wet) during entire germination process.

Ideal temperature for germination is 15-22°C/60-75°F.

Seeds should germinate within 2-3 weeks if kept in ideal conditions.

Step 2

Continue to keep moist, watering only when the top layer of soil dries out, Tarragon does not like to be too wet and may rot. Keep in a full sun position, in the shade they can grow too leggy and top heavy trying to reach full sun.

Seedlings can be transplanted gently once they have at least 2-4 true leaves. Transplant into the garden if wanted once they are strong enough and the threat of any frosts have passed.

Space plants 30 cm (1 foot) apart to give them room to grow.

Because these plants are a natural insect repellent, many people choose to grow them close to their outdoor living spaces. Tarragon can be kept in pots.

Step 3

Tarragon is drought tolerant once established and does well in drier soils. This plant is very hardy and rarely needs any fertiliser. Only fertilise if the plant looks like it needs it.

Prune back at the beginning of Spring to help them keep a nice shape.

Plants will mature and produce flowers at around 1-2 years.
