Cotinus coggygria (Smoke Tree) is a cold-hardy shrub that is native to a wide region stretching from southern Europe to central China. The Smoke Tree is mainly grown as ornamental and provides an Autumn show with its multi-coloured leaves. During Autumn the leaves can turn purple, yellow, red and orange. Smoke trees make a handsome feature tree or can be grown as a hedge or screening plant.

Growth

Cotinus coggygria is a multi-branching shrub that by training the branches can reach heights of up to 6 metres (20 feet). Otherwise, its habit can be random and often appears as an overgrown bush. Smoke Trees are attractive for all four seasons and can tolerate a wide range of conditions.

Germination is challenging. The seeds are hard and require a two-step stratification method prior to sowing. In the wild, the seeds can randomly sprout over several winters as an insurance against fires.

Smoke trees get their name from tiny little hairs which replace the pollinated flowers. These hairs tend to cluster and turn a hazy pink and slightly purple colour over the summer. The glossy leaves in Autumn start changing colours and is the reason Smoke Trees are popular in nurseries around the world.

Plants are slow to establish but are then quite fast growing when young though they slow down with age. It can take the shrub 3-5 years to reach a flowering age. If seeds are required, multiple plants will need to be grown because they require a male and female to cross-pollinate. It is impossible to know from the seed which sex the plant will become.

HOW TO GROW COTINUS COGGYGRIA (Smoke Tree)

Note: Smoke Tree seeds have a stubborn dormancy and a very hard, water-impermeable seed coat and require both a hot and cold pre-treatment for high germination rates to occur. Without pre-treatment it is unlikely that the seeds will germinate in their first season. This combination of seed pre-treatments is necessary to allow to meet the seeds embryo and trigger the germination process.

Try to line up your pre-treatment finishing around the start of Spring or Autumn for optimal results. That would mean beginning Step 2 around either early June or December. Seedlings sprouted in Autumn may require protection over their first winter to survive in cold, temperate and some sub-tropical climates.

Step 1

Place the seeds in a heat proof container and pour very hot (almost boiling!) water over them and leave them to soak for between 12-24 hours then fully drain away the water.

Step 2

Prepare a teaspoon (per 10 seeds) of well-draining medium/soil into which the seeds are to be mixed, this can be a 50/50 mixture of compost and propagating sand, perlite or vermiculite. The chosen substrate mix needs to be moist but not wet or your seeds may drown or rot.

Mix the seeds into the soil mixture making sure that there is enough to keep the seeds covered by not too much where you can’t find the seeds afterwards.

Place the seed mixture into a clear plastic bag like a zip lock bag and seal leaving only a small open end for air exchange – if it is a freezer bag or similar it needs to be loosely tied. Write the date on the bag so that you know when the pre-treatment was started.

The seeds require a sustained cold period to break down the dormancy that is within them, this is easily achieved by placing the prepared bag of seeds and medium mix in the fridge for between 60 to 90 days.

It is quite possible for the seeds to germinate in the bag at these temperatures when they are ready to do so, if they do, just remove them from the bag and carefully plant them up.

Every week or so check on them to ensure the soil isn’t drying out and if adding moisture keep it light with a misty spray.

Step 3

Once cold stratification is complete, sow in pots or seed trays of good quality compost at 1 cm deep.

The deal temperature for germination is 15-20°C/60-70°F. Germination usually occurs within 4 weeks in these ideal conditions. Growth in the first growing season is usually between 20 and 40cm and accelerates in the second and subsequent years.

Plant them out into their permanent positions after their second winter with well-draining soil in full sun to part shade. This species usually transplants very easily.

Keep watered over spring and summer months, and if temperatures rise above 30°C/86°F mulch the soil around the base to protect the roots from drying out.
