Growth

Cucumis metuliferus is an annual climber that reaches the modest height of 1.5 metres (5 feet). African Horned Melons enjoy a warm climates that have an extended dry season. Seeds germinate easily but a high percentage is achieved when kept at temperatures are between 20° and 35 °C (68° to 95 °F). If started indoors it is recommended that transplanting waits until daytime temperatures exceed 15 °C (59 °F). Near Melbourne, we sow around mid to late September and by around January / February the fruits are ready for harvest.

The ripe fruit has orange skin and lime-green flesh that is like jelly. They have horn-like spikes that are easily brushed off when preparing them to eat.

After harvesting, our plants get pulled out of the ground and chopped up. Sounds awful but otherwise they would endure a slow freezing death as autumn turns to winter. The chopped stems and leaves make an excellent addition to the compost heap.

FACTS ABOUT CUCUMIS METULIFERUS (African Horned Melon)

Upon tasting it for the first time on-air in 1987, David Letterman described it as “damned near inedible.”

The peel is a rich source of Vitamin C and dietary fiber but there are tastier ways to reach your daily requirements.

African Horned Melons have a high water content and provides several electrolytes that are necessary for staying hydrated.

Germination Instructions

CUCUMIS METULIFERUS (African Horned Melon)

Step 1

Seeds are ready to be sown immediately, however they perform poorly in temperatures lower than 15°C.

During winter, it is advised to sow Kiwano seeds indoors or in a greenhouse, until the soil warms up or they grow
their first set of true leaves.

Ideally, start directly into the ground and allow up to 120cm spacing between plants. They are climbers and will require some support such as a trellis or fence to climb up.

Sow seeds in groups of 2-3 about 10mm deep and provide a complete watering of the soil.

Step 2

During germination, wait until soil is completely dry before watering, and when doing so, provide a deep drenching. Usually, once a week will be sufficient.

This recreates their native habitat and increases the strike rate of the seeds.

As does temperature, with a much higher percentage germinating when temperatures are 22-25°C during the day. If the soil is warm seeds should germinate in around 2-3 weeks.

Step 3

Transplant seedlings once they have grown two true leaves and space them roughly 100-120cm apart directly into the garden. Now is a good time to prepare a trellis or support structure in readiness for their quick growth.

Continue to water as suggested in Step 2 until the plant begins to flower and fruit.

Providing a full drenching each time encourages deeper root growth and improves the quality of the plant.

Step 4

Once the Kiwano plant begins to flower change the watering routine.

Water less each time but more regularly such as twice a week.

African Horned Melons can be ready to eat in around 4 months.
