Growth

Feijoa sellowiana is an evergreen shrub that bears fruit and reaches heights of around 5 metres (15 feet). It can take 3-5 years to reach flowering age and will require multiple plants to pollinate and produce fruit. Hand pollination can produce excellent results but requires skills and time to apply. Check out this video here and scroll to 1:30 to see how to hand pollinate Feijoa flowers.

They prefer climates that range between 5 to 25°C / 41 to 77°F and then require at least 50 hours of winter chill (0 to 7°C / 32 to 45°F) to properly set fruit. In Australia, Pineapple Guavas can fruit in places as cold as Hobart to as far north as Bundaberg in Queensland.

Flowering runs from late spring to early summer with fruit setting in late summer and autumn. Their flowers are 2.5 cm (one inch) across, bisexual and borne singly or in a cluster. Each flower has long, bright red stamens with large grains of yellow pollen on the ends. Petals are edible, sweet and added to salads. They also attract birds who help achieve pollination while eating them.

FACTS ABOUT FEIJOA SELLOWIANA (Pineapple Guava)

Pineapple Guava fruit is eaten raw but it can also be made into pies, cakes, puddings and jams. The Feijoa has recently become used in cosmetics as an exfoliant.

Supermarkets don’t often stock Pineapple Guavas as they spoil within a few days. Attempts have been made in New Zealand but the largest commercial success by far is through plant sales at nurseries.

HOW TO GROW FEIJOA SELLOWIANA (Pineapple Guava)

Step 1

Start by soaking the seeds for about an hour in water of room temperature. Then sow seeds into seed trays or small pots filled with a combination of sand and soil. Gently press the seeds into the surface of the moistened soil and cover lightly.

Seeds usually take 3-4 weeks to germinate but achieve a higher strike rate if soil temperatures are kept at 12 to 18°C / 53 to 64°F. Outdoors in spring or indoors in winter is usually adequate in our temperate, Melbourne conditions.

Step 2

Once sprouted, move the seedlings to a place of soft sun (morning sun) for about two hours to begin with. Gradually increase the sunlight until young plants are getting 4-5 hours of sunshine per day.

Pineapple Guava plants will tolerate and during hot summers prefer a location that has part-shade.

Step 3

They should be left to develop in pots (and upsized if required) until at least after their first full winter. Transplant one year old seedlings during spring.

Step 4

Once established, will survive cold and not require much watering unless flowering or fruiting. Feijoas need temperatures to fall below 7°C/44°F for at least 50 hours during winter to develop correctly for fruiting.

Pineapple Guava plants generally take 3-5 years to begin flowering and setting fruit.
