Growth

Liriodendron tulipifera is a fast growing flowering tree that reaches heights of up to 30 metres (98 feet) but has been known to grow much taller. In cultivation they average a more modest 15 metres (50 feet). Tulip Trees enjoy a large range of climates though do prefer warmer temperatures. Even so, they grow wild in southern regions of Canada, although flowering is delayed several months.

Mature trunks of the species are uniform and can reach up to 1.8 metres (6 feet) in diameter, often without low-level branches. It’s fast growing yet straight form has made it a popular tree in plantations for a wide range of wood-related products. The tree is named for its cup-shaped flowers which resemble that of a Tulip. These can often grow unnoticed due to the dominance of leaves. Flowering occurs in warmer regions around mid-Spring can appear in Summer in cold and temperate climates.

As Autumn arrives, the leaves become the prime attraction as they change into a bright yellow colour.

HOW TO GROW LIRIODENDRON TULIPIFERA (American Tulip Tree)

Step 1

Soak the seeds for 24 hours in water of room temperature. It doesn’t hurt to leave them in longer but be sure to change the water every 24-48 hours.

Drain the water and mix the seeds with a small quantity of moist garden soil or vermiculite and place into a plastic zip-lock bag.

American Tulip Trees require a period of cold stratification prior to sowing. Seal the bag, date it, and put the bag into the refrigerator for around 8 weeks. This is the absolute minimum period required.

If growing American Tulip trees commercially and want a high germination rate (higher than 10%, closer to 30%), it has been found that the optimum stratification period (period stored in the fridge) is 140 days.

Step 2

After stratification, plant the seeds into small-medium sized pots of well-drained topsoil and cover with roughly 1cm of soil. We recommend using 100mm+ pots and sowing 2-3 seeds in each as young seedlings can reach 60cm or 2 feet in their first season.

Keep moist and in a warm, sunny location. Ideal germination temperatures are between 20-25°C / 68-77°F

Germination should take around 3-4 weeks.

Step 3

Once sprouted, move pot to part sunny position. Gradually, increase sun as the seedling grows. Use the small/medium pot until after the first winter so that they can be moved for protection. Avoid leaving young seedlings during their first winter outside if frost is expected.

Step 4

Transplant to final position after their first full winter. Be sure to mulch their base prior to their second full winter to ensure their roots are protected.

Once established, will tolerate temperatures down to -20°C/-4°F in winter if well mulched.

American Tulip Trees can take between 10-15 years to produce seed.
