Moringa oleifera is also commonly referred to as the Tree of Life, Drumstick Tree, Ben Oil Tree, Moringa Tree, Horseradish Tree or as Malunggay in some parts of Asia.

Suitable for Sub-Tropical and Tropical climates but can be grown in colder climates if pruned back and brought indoors or placed in a greenhouse over winter.

Growth

Moringa oleifera is a flowering tree that reaches heights of up to 12 metres (39 feet) and up to 8 metres (25 feet) wide. The tree has an open crown with fragile branches and feather-like leaves that build up a foliage of tripinnate leaves. The fragrant white flowers can be found within the first growing season (in Summer) on slender, hairy stalks in spreading or drooping flower clusters which range from 10-25cm (4-10 inches) in length.

Miracle Trees prefer warmer climates where the nighttime temperatures remain above 10°C / 50°F. If given daytime temperatures above 25°C / 77°F young seedlings can grow very quickly. Regular pruning is useful to not only keep the tree under control, but to encourage the new growth of the highly prized young shoots.

Moringa oleifera does not tolerate frost or temperatures below 10°C / 50°F, so is often grown indoors or inside a greenhouse in temperate or colder climates. The fruits or seeds arrive in late spring or early summer and are rounded, have a thick shell and are usually shorter than 10cm (4 inches).

FACTS ABOUT MORINGA OLEIFERA (Miracle Tree)

Moringa oleifera trees can be harvested up to 7 times per year, each time being cut back to around 60 cm (2 feet) from the ground. Some farms in southern India where Miracle Trees often flower and fruit twice a year can produce up to 31 tons of seed pods per hectare per year.

Ground Miracle Tree seeds are also used to purify water. After crushing the seed kernels into a powder, they are added to the unclean water and stirred at regular intervals. Roughly 50-150 mg of seed powder is required per litre. Learn more about using Moringa for water purification here.

Moringa oleifera is said to have 7 times the amount of Vitamin C than oranges, 10 times more Vitamin A than carrots, 17 times more calcium than milk, 15 times more potassium than bananas and 25 times more iron than spinach. The leaves also contain more protein than an egg!

The Miracle tree is widely used for medicinal purposes throughout the world. Some of the benefits this species is said to have are for lowering blood glucose levels, as an anti-inflammatory & anti-oxidant, for reducing blood pressure & high cholesterol, to promote heart health, relieve arthritis and much more. HOW TO GROW MORINGA OLEIFERA (Miracle Tree)

Note: Included here are two ways to germinate Moringa seeds. The first method is for colder climates and growing in containers and the second is for direct sowing which is more suitable to warmer climates.

Moringas can be successfully grown indoors if they have plenty of sunlight, warmth and are pruned regularly to be kept at a manageable size.

Cold Climates and Containers

Step 1

Begin by soaking the seeds in water of room temperature for at least six hours but less than 24 hours. Overnight is ideal.

Step 2

Sow seeds approximately 2.5cm (1 inch) deep into soil of pots at least 20cm (8 inch) in diameter. The deeper the pots the better, Moringa have deep tap roots and don’t like to be disturbed too much so, the less transplanting the better.

Step 3

Moisten the soil and then move into a full sun position.

Seeds should germinate in 10-14 days, but it can be quicker if the soil is at temperatures of 25-35°C / 77-95°F throughout the process.

Keep the soil moist but not wet and move pots either indoors or into a greenhouse to avoid any frost or temperatures below 10°C / 50°F which will potentially kill the plant.

Step 4

In colder climates, even a fully established Moringa tree could die during winter. So the final position should be in a large pot that is able to be moved inside for protection during cold conditions. It is important to make sure the plant is in a window position with plenty of sunlight.

Pruning back when necessary to manageable indoor heights. Moringa’s cope well with pruning.

Miracle Trees in colder climates can take 12-18 months to reach full maturity.

Warm Climates and Direct Sowing

Step 1

Begin by soaking the seeds in water of room temperature for at least six hours but less than 24 hours. Overnight is ideal.

Step 2

Each tree requires a position in full sun which should be planned out prior to direct sowing. For each tree, dig a hole 60cm (2 feet) deep by 30cm (1 foot) wide. This will loosen the soil and allow the main taproot to dig with less resistance.

Fill the hole in until roughly 2.5cm (1 inch) from the surface. Then sow 2-3 seeds, cover to meet with the grounds surface and moisten well.

Seeds should germinate in 10-14 days, but it can be quicker if the soil is at temperatures of 25-35°C / 77-95°F throughout the process.

Step 3

Shortly after germination, keep the best seedling and discard the rest or separate all seedlings into different locations. They will grow fast and may become entangled making it difficult to divide their taproots.
Keep moist but don’t overwater or water if it has been raining.

Step 4

In warmer climates, Moringa trees can reach a harvestable stage by around 6 months. Look to prune back/harvest at regular intervals to encourage growth and to keep the height manageable.

Miracle Trees in warmer climates can take 6-8 months to begin blooming.
