Growth

Ocimum basilicum is a culinary herb that grows to a maximum height of 70cm (2 feet) by a width of 30cm (12 inches). They enjoy full sun, warm climates and do well growing in containers. Cinnamon Basil makes an excellent companion plant for tomatoes, chilli, dill, parsley and asparagus and also works to repel unwanted insects such as mosquitos, beetles, hornworms and thrips.

Cinnamon Basil can be grown in temperate regions if they are protected from any late frosts and avoid temperatures that drop below 10°C / 86°F. In greenhouses or tropical areas, the plant can grow as a perennial.

If kept in full sun, with regular moisture it can take around 90-110 days for the leaves to reach a harvestable age.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW OCIMUM BASILICUM (Cinnamon Basil)

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal. Cover very lightly so the seeds are exposed to sunlight as it is necessary for them to germinate.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 18-30°C / 65-95°F. Germination can take between 10-14 days.

Step 2

It is recommended to grow seedlings in pots for their first twelve months. This allows them to be moved to avoid any cold snaps or low temperatures and contains them from spreading as they can become invasive.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 20°C/68°F.

Cinnamon Basil requires warm temperatures and can be damaged if temperatures drop below 10°C/50°F

Step 3

The final position should be in full sun. Finish transplanting by watering in the seedlings.

The leaves of Cinnamon Basil can be ready to harvest in around 90-110 days depending on weather conditions.
