In some cultures, Oregano is called Wild Marjoram and is in the same genus as Sweet Marjoram which is a close relative. Both herbs are commonly used in many Mediterranean cuisines including Italian, Spanish, French, Greek and Turkish.

Growth

Origanum vulgare is a perennial, herbaceous plant that grows to 90cm (3 feet) tall by 1.2 metres (4 feet) wide. Oregano is a versatile plant that enjoys full sun, light watering, copes with poor soils and tolerates sub-zero temperatures including frost.

During Spring, Oregano can produce flowers on erect spikes that range in colours that include white, pink or light purple. The flowers are not only aromatic but are excellent at attracting beneficial insects into the garden.

In ideal climates, Oregano takes between 80-100 days to be ready to harvest.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW ORIGANUM VULGARE (Oregano)

 

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 18-25°C / 65-77°F. Germination can take between 7-14 days.

Step 2

It is recommended to grow Oregano seedlings in pots as they can be become invasive.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 15°C/59°F.

Keep well-watered but wet for the first week after transplanting.

Step 3

The final position should be in full sun or semi-shade. Finish transplanting by watering in the seedlings.

Once established, plants can tolerate cold temperatures down to -10°C/14°F.

The leaves of Oregano can be ready to harvest in between 80-100 days from sowing.
