Growth

Passiflora quadrangularis is a tropical perennial evergreen that can grow to a maximum height of 15 metres (49 feet) by 5 metres (16 feet) wide. Giant Granadilla thrives in warm temperatures and moist nutrient-dense soils. However, if protected while they are seedlings, established plants can flower and fruit in temperate climates and will tolerate light frosts.

Giant Granadilla leaves are alternate, broad-ovate and can be as large as 20cm (8 inches) long by 15cm (6 inches) wide. Plants grow quickly in warm, moist conditions in full sun with soil that is well-drained. The ideal temperatures range from 20-30°C / 68-86°F during the day and young plants should be protected if temperatures drop below 8°C / 45°F.

It is recommended in colder climates to grow young Giant Granadilla plants in pots for the first full season and then transplant after the last frost in the second season. During the first season, they will require a trellis or similar to climb on and to prune off any flowers to encourage plant growth and to avoid any late Autumn damage.

In tropical conditions, Giant Granadilla can start producing fruit within the first growing season but in temperate climates usually takes between 18-24 months.

HOW TO GROW PASSIFLORA QUADRANGULARIS (Giant Granadilla)

Step 1

Soak seeds in water for 24 hours, changing the water after 12 hours to avoid any excess bacteria growth.

Step 2

Sow seeds onto the surface of a well-draining seed starting mix and surface cover lightly with a further 5mm of soil.

Lightly moisten and keep pot in warm, bright position.

Seeds need the soil to be warm to germinate with ideal temperatures ranging from 20-25°C/68-77°F.

A greenhouse is ideal, but if you cannot provide these temperatures, you may need to use a heat mat.

Seed germination can begin around 4-6 weeks, however, can take longer due to their hard shell or in cooler conditions.

Step 3

Transplanting can be done once seedlings are 10cm (4 inches) in height or once they have 2-3 true leaves and are strong enough.

It is recommended to provide support for the vines by using bamboo sticks or a trellis.

Step 4

Move to final position of part or full sun. Be sure to provide something for the vine to grow up.

Giant Granadilla can take between 6-12 months to fruit, though in temperate climates it usually takes until their second growing season (12-24 months).
