Growth

Psidium cattleyanum is a perennial fruit tree that reaches a maximum height of 6 metres (20 feet) and a width of up to 4 metres (13 feet). It grows in a wide range of climates, tolerating cold frosts in temperate climates and heavy rains in tropical conditions. Due to its invasive nature, it is recommended to be grown in pots or well-prepared garden beds.

The trunk of Strawberry Guavas have a smooth bark with oval to elliptical leaves that grow to 5cm (2 inches) in length. Flowers can grow individually or in clusters of three while the fruit can range from yellow to dark red or purple.

Strawberry Guava trees can take between 3-6 years to reach fruiting age when grown from seed.

FACTS ABOUT PSIDIUM CATTLEYANUM (Strawberry Guava)

The species is named in honour of English horticulturist, William Cattley and the Latin term Psidium comes from the word psidion meaning armlet.

In Tanzania, the fruits are tied together to create necklaces, while in Brazil the tree has become an essential reforestation plant for its ability to establish quickly and to assist with soil erosion.

The fruits of Psidium cattleyanum are used to make jams and juices as well as to treat diarrhoea, colic and haemorrhages.

Due to the plants hard, durable wood, the trunk and branches are used to make wooden tools, for lathe work and for charcoal and firewood.

HOW TO GROW PSIDIUM CATTLEYANUM (Strawberry Guava)

Step 1

Start by soaking the seeds in cold water for 10 minutes.

Then fill small pots of around 10cm (4 inches) wide with a soil that will allow for good drainage and moisten to ensure it is damp.

Sow 2-3 seeds per pot by gently pressing them into the surface and then covering them with a thin layer of soil. Lightly mist to ensure the seeds are not disturbed.

Then leave the pot/s in a location where they are not exposed to direct sunlight but can still achieve a consistent temperature of 20-30°C (68-86°F).

Temperatures outside this range will slow or inhibit germination. Covering the pot with cling wrap and holding it with a rubber band or using a heat mat is recommended if temperatures will be regularly below 20°C/68°F.

Step 2

Check soil regularly to ensure it doesn’t dry out. Add water when the soil surface is dry. Misting ensures the seeds aren’t disturbed and won’t sink too far down in the soil.

Seeds can be erratic at germinating but following the instructions above should take between in 4-6 weeks.

Step 3

Once the first set of leaves have properly developed, seedlings can be moved to where they will receive soft sunlight, such as the first few hours in the morning.

Gradually increase the number of hours the seedlings are exposed to sunlight to strengthen their stems and acclimatise to their conditions.

Keep seedlings indoors if temperatures, even overnight, are forecast to drop below 10°C (50°F).

Transplant seedlings when 10-15cm (4-6 inches) in height and after all potential frost has passed. Keep young seedlings well watered and protected from hot sun exposure over summer.

Step 4

Transplant to final position after the first full winter. Keep well watered during hot spells and don’t water during periods of heavy rain. Once established will become a prolific provider of fruit and will tolerate frost and temperatures as low as -5°C / 23°F

In temperate regions, plants will die off if left outside during winter but will recover quickly in the Spring.

Strawberry Guava trees can take between 3-6 years to begin fruiting.
