Growth

The Red Garden Strawberry plant is a perennial growing to around 30-40 cm tall and wide. This variety sends out runners in the attempt to re-produce more plants, which it can be very successful at. The runners will grow along the ground, root and then die off leaving two (or more with multiple runners) separate plants, this is great if you want to produce many strawberry plants for sale or similar; but not great for fruit production. While the plants are sending out runners, this is where they will spend their energy, so for good fruit production, Remove runners once they appear to encourage more strawberries, these can be planted once cut to grow new plants. Also harvesting regularly, once red and ripe; will encourage further fruiting.

Red Garden Strawberries can produce fruit in the first 3-4 months from seed germination and are prolific fruiters; with the right care. Fruit is approximately 3-5 cm in length and and roughly 3 cm wide.

Feeding your strawberries through their flowering and fruiting periods will keep them healthy and productive. We recommend growing all edible plants organically, your body will thank you and the food will taste much better! There are plenty of options these days for organic fertilisers; soil conditioners and pest & fungal control. Don’t underestimate companion planting.

HOW TO GROW FRAGARIA X ANANASSA (Red Garden Strawberry)

NOTE: Soaking seeds for 40 minutes post cold stratification in Sulfuric Acid will significantly improve germination rates.

Step 1
Add a teaspoon of moist vermiculite or soil to your zip lock bag and place the seeds in the fridge for 3-4 months for cold stratification. Seeds can also be placed in the freezer without any medium (well sealed bag or container) for 3-4 weeks but must be allowed to come back to room temperature before opening the bag and sowing.

Step 2
Sowing can be done in Spring as the weather starts to warm, but for quicker fruiting start them indoors in a warm, well lit area.

Sow and press seeds gently onto the surface of your medium, avoiding pushing them into the soil and burying them, leave seeds uncovered. As a medium a seed raising mix rich in compost is fine in either seed trays or small pots..

Moisten gently with a mist spray that will not push them deeper into the soil, light is needed to assist in germination.

Step 3
Place into a well lit position, that is not in any hot direct sun, that will dry the soil out too quickly.

Germination time can be a little slow and sporadic depending on your chosen method of growing and ranges from from 2-6 weeks but once they germinate, they grow quite quickly.

If started indoors during winter they will be ready to transplant by early-mid spring – help them adjust to outdoors once the weather starts to warm by taking the tray/pots outdoors a little more each day until they are hardened off and ready for transplant.

Ideal germination temperatures are 16-21°C/60-70°F

The soil must be kept moist during the entire germination period, but not wet & boggy.

Step 4
Seedlings can be transplanted if needed once 3-4 true leaves are growing.

Do not transplant outdoors while they are babies until any chance of frost has passed, then they can be moved directly into the ground.

Once established, will require regular watering and daily checking through summer when flowering and fruiting occurs. They will appreciate some compost, mulching and some organic fertilser to help them thrive during this period.

Red Garden Strawberries take between 3-6 months to bear fruit when grown from seed, depending on how / when they were started.
