Ruta graveolens is also commonly known as the Herb of Grace and the Common Rue plant. The term Rue is likely because of the bitter taste of the leaves. Literally, you will ‘rue’ the day you tried it. Rue is also a very versatile plant. It is used to make red dye, a medicinal herb, a beautiful bordering flower, in perfumes, as incense, food flavouring and to repel moths, insects and cats.

Rue also makes a useful plant companion for Lavender, Raspberries and Roses.

HOW TO GROW RUTA GRAVEOLENS (Rue)

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. Cover very lightly so that the seeds are exposed to some sunlight.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 15-22°C / 59-71°F. Germination can take between 7-21 days.

Step 2

Rue seedlings require moist and warm conditions and enjoy 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 20°C/68°F.

Keep well-watered but not too wet for the first week after transplanting.

Step 3

The final position should be in full sun.

Once established, plants can tolerate cold temperatures down to -10°C / 14°F

In good conditions, Rue can be ready to harvest in around 100-120 days.
