Growth

Schisandra chinensis is a perennial vine that grows vigorously to a maximum length of around 9 metres (29 feet) but can sometimes reach 25 metres (82 feet) in the wild. The species is dioecious, meaning not self fertile, and requires a male and female plant to cross-pollinate. Flowers on a female plant will only produce fruit when exposes to the pollen from a male plant.

Leaves are oval shaped up to 11 cm (4 inches) long and 7 cm (3 inches) wide with the petioles having a slight red colouring. Five Flavour Berry plants are extremely hardy and once established are low maintenance and produce a huge number of red berries during early Autumn. After fruiting, it is recommended to prune back the vines of the plant to encourage growth once the warmer seasons return.

When grown from seed, the Five Flavour Berry can take between 4-5 years to begin flowering and fruiting.

HOW TO GROW SCHISANDRA CHINENSIS (Five Flavour Berry)

NOTE: Five Flavour Berry plants will rarely fruit in warmer Sub-tropical and Tropical gardens and are recommended for Cold and Temperate climates.

Step 1

Start by soaking the seeds for 24 hours, changing the water after 12 hours to ensure the water remains fresh.

Then place the seeds into a plastic zip-lock with damp peat moss, vermiculite or moist garden sand (not wet), write the date and place bag into the fridge for 8 weeks.

Check them every two weeks to make sure that the medium is still moist and if not use a spray bottle to re-moisten. Also check for any sprouts; if any have sprouted – take them out and plant them as per step 2, leaving the non-sprouted seeds in the fridge.

Step 2

After 8 weeks, fill pots or seed trays with well draining soil, a compost mix is ideal. A mix with sand, perlite or vermiculite will assist with drainage.

Place the seeds gently on the surface and lightly cover with more soil. Water with a spray bottle to avoid over watering and then move into a warm, part sun position.

Optimal temperature for germination is 15-20°C/60-70°F. A heat mat may be necessary if you cannot provide these temperatures. You can also cover tray with plastic wrap to keep warmth and moisture inside the tray.

Seeds should start to germinate between 3-4 weeks and can be sporadic, so don’t give up on any that haven’t sprouted until after 12 weeks!

Step 3

Once sprouted, move tray to sunny position.

Transplant seedlings when at least one year old and at least 10-15cm ( 4-6inches) in height.

Keep in a small-medium pot until after first winter.

Step 4

Transplant to final position after last frost. When planting out allow 50cm (2 feet) of space around and in between them.

Once established, will survive cold weather. Additional water is advised when fruiting.

Five Flavour Berries can take between 3-5 years to begin fruiting.
