Growth

Sesbania grandiflora is a tropical evergreen tree that has a height and spread of 25 metres (82 feet) by 6 metres (20 feet). Hummingbird trees are intolerant to frost and cold temperatures and are high-maintenance in containers due to their fast-growth rate. These trees are recommended for Sub-Tropical and Tropical climates and will thrive in poor soils, full sun and lots of rain.

The leaves can reach as long as 30cm (12 inches) and have leaflets in 10-20 pairs while the red flowers are oblong to 10cm (4 inches) with 2-4 flower racemes. In some climates, flowering can occur all year.

One of the best benefits of a Hummingbird tree is to use the fallen leaf fronds as a world-class soil fertiliser. For nitrogen fixing, the leaves are used by agricultural farmers of many third-world countries to excellent effect.

FACTS ABOUT SESBANIA GRANDIFLORA (Hummingbird Tree)

Sesbania grandiflora is used to make highly nutritional fodder for ruminants like cattle, though it can be deadly to chickens. In India, milk yield was increased by 8% when cattle were fed 5 kg fresh leaf/day. Throughout the dry season in Indonesia, as much as 70% of the livestock diets consist of the leaves of the Hummingbird tree.

The flowers of Sesbania grandiflora are eaten as a vegetable in much of south-east Asia. In Thailand they are called dok khae and are used raw or blanched in well-known curries such as Kaeng Som.

The crushed leaves are applied as a poultice to sprains, bruises, swellings and itching.

HOW TO GROW SESBANIA GRANDIFLORA (Hummingbird Tree)

Step 1

Soak the seeds for 24 hours in water. Start the water off by boiling it first and then leaving for 3-5 minutes to cool.

Prepare small pots that are at least 10cm (4 inches) wide with a good seed-raising mix.

Moisten the soil and leave them in a sunny location. The optimum temperature during germination is 18-25°C / 65-77°F.

To increase humidity or warmth during germination, cover the pots with a clear plastic, such as glad wrap.

Step 2

Keep the soil moist but not wet by checking it every two days and add water as necessary by using a light mist. The plastic cover should be carefully replaced each time. If available, check the soil temperature.

Seeds should germinate after 10-21 days but can occur within a few days.

Once seedlings germinate, remove the plastic cover, and move to them to a location where they will receive around 2 hours of morning sunshine each day. Don’t leave them outside if the temperature day or night will fall below 10°C / 50°F.

Step 3

Gradually increase the sunshine they receive by increasing their sunlight in weekly stages. Until plants reach 30 cm (12 inches) high, keep them in pots by up sizing as roots begin to show through the bottom. In cold climates, plants should only be grown in pots to protect them from winter conditions.

Step 4

Transplant during spring well past the last frost and ensure they are in a location where they will receive maximum sunlight. Mulching can help to keep the roots warmer when winter returns and protect them from drying out over summer.

Hummingbird trees can take between 18-24 months to mature.
