FACTS ABOUT TARAXACUM OFFICINALE (European Dandelion)

Traditional Chinese Medicine have been using Dandelion leaves for its diuretic abilities for around 2,000 years while the French have dubbed the plant ‘pissenlit’, which basically means “bed wetter.” Dandelion Tea is not recommended before bed or for those on blood pressure or blood thinning medication.

Taraxacum officinale is one of the world’s most successful plants, with prominence or invasiveness found in temperate regions of six continents. This success lies in its ability to not only produce nearly 100 million seeds per hectare, but they can also spread them for up to 8km (5 miles).

Roots of the plant can be harvested in during their second autumn, dried and roasted to make a coffee substitute. Dandelion leaves are also used in salads and are high in Vitamins A and C and Iron, Phosphorus and Potassium. The flowers can be made into a wine.

Traditional and modern herbal medicine practitioners have used Dandelion internally to treat a range of problems including gallstones, jaundice, gout, acne, joint pain, skin conditions, urinary disorders, gall bladder, acne and eczema.

HOW TO GROW TARAXACUM OFFICINALE (European Dandelion)

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal. Cover very lightly so the seeds are exposed to some sunlight as it is necessary for them to germinate.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 10-20°C/50-68°F. Germination can take between 7-21 days.

Step 2

It is recommended to grow Dandelion seedlings in pots as they can become extremely invasive.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 15°C/59°F.

Keep moist for the first week after transplanting.

Step 3

The final position should be in full sun or semi-shade.

Once established, plants can tolerate cold temperatures down to -5°C/23°F except when flowering or growing seeds.

The Dandelion flowers can be ready to harvest during Spring and Summer and take around 80-90 days.
