During the winter months, Dancing Girl Gingers go dormant and appear to die off. But they leave bulbils in the ground which allows them to respawn as the temperatures warm up in Spring. As a rough guide, Dancing Girl Gingers will often start dormancy when temperatures begin to dip below 18°C / 65°F.

Growth

Globba schomburgkii is a tropical rhizomatous plant that grows to a short height of 60-100 cm (2-3 feet). Dancing Girl Ginger is extremely frost tender and is often grown indoors or in greenhouses in colder climates. Where temperatures fall below 18°C / 65°F the plant turns dormant, drop bulbils on the ground and wait until the warm weather returns. In tropical regions, Dancing Girl Gingers can continuously bloom as long as the soil doesn’t dry out.

Leaves are broadleaf, elliptic to lance and reach lengths to 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) and attached to long stems that stretch to 50 cm long (2 feet, or most of the plants size). The yellow flowers occur in late Summer and bloom through to Autumn (depending on how warm the climate is). Flowers are pendulous and their dancing style is how the plant gets its name. The bulbs that are dropped during colder periods are globose or ovoid and just 4mm in diameter.

HOW TO GROW GLOBBA SCHOMBURGKII (Dancing Girl Ginger)

Step 1
Soak seeds for around half an hour in water of room temperature. Leave longer if the seeds haven’t expanded. As long as they appear to have some moisture they are ready to be sown.

Step 2
Sow seeds onto the surface of a well draining seed raising mix or peat moss and gently press to ensure the seeds make good contact with the soil. Cover lightly and cover the pot or tray with plastic to increase the warmth and the humidity.

These seeds MUST stay moist at all times, drying out of the medium (peat/soil) will kill the seeds embryo quickly once germination inside the seed has begun.

Step 3
A warm greenhouse or windowsill in a bright but not direct full sun location is ideal for germination.

Keep soil moist at all times during germination but not soaking wet, as this can rot your seeds.

Optimal soil temperature for germination is 18-25 °C / 64-77°F.

Germination begins at approximately 2-3 weeks in optimal conditions.

Step 4
Once germination has begun, remove plastic from pots/tray if covered with plastic wrap and move them to a location of morning sun to allow them to adapt (harden off).

Allow them to establish before transplanting or upgrading the pot size. They should be at least 10 cm (4 inches) high.

Step 5
An ideal location long term is either in pots (in colder climates) or in a part shade position in tropical or hot climates. Dancing Girl Ginger will require additional watering on extremely hot days.

Cold temperatures below 18°C / 65°F will trigger dormancy which isn’t terminal as the plant will respawn in mid to late Spring.

They prefer a well draining soil and will become more drought tolerant as they mature.

Dancing Girl Ginger can flower in their first full season but more often takes two seasons. Flowering in 12-18 months.
