Growth

This particular variety of Pink Polka Dot will grow to around 40-50 cm in height, with a spread of approximately 30 cm. The leaves are ovate and can grow to around 5 cm in length. This species produces small lavender coloured flowers that appear in spikes/stems in late Summer to Autumn and look very similar to a honeysuckle flower. Remove flowers if you want your plant to focus its energy on foliage growth, Hypoestes can look a bit straggly after they have put all their energy into flowering and often will die off.

Hypoestes phyllostachya is not frost tolerant but will cope with cooler temperatures down to around 5-10°C before it starts to die off. This species is fast growing, so it is easy to grow for colour annually. Although the Pink Polka Dot plant prefers plenty of light, a space with indirect light or afternoon shade is best. Full sun can take away some brightness from the colour, which is why they are so suited as an indoor plant.

This species when grown perennially can get a bit leggy and need pruning to help it remain full; especially if it is a low light area where it is trying to reach for sunlight. A well draining but moist nutrient rich soil is preferred. Indoors they will appreciate a feed each month, outdoors they are a little less needy in this department if the soil is compost rich.

The Polka Dot plant has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Hypoestes is non-toxic to pets, which is fantastic for those of us that love our indoor pets and our fur babies!

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW HYPOESTES PHYLLOSTACHYA (Pink Polka Dot)

Step 1
Sow Pink Polka Dot seeds on the surface of a seed raising mix or other preferred medium in either small pots or a seedling tray. Gently press the seeds into the surface of the soil to create good contact. No need to cover them with any further soil as they are positively photoblastic, which means they require light to germinate.

Moisten the soil with a mist spray bottle and keep the medium moist throughout the entire germination period.

Step 2
In a cooler climate they are best started indoors 6-8 weeks prior to the last frosts. If you do not have a mini greenhouse, to create a more natural humid environment you can place plastic kitchen wrap (glad wrap) over the pots/tray.

Place into a warm well lit area that is out of full direct sunlight and don’t allow the media to dry out at any stage during
germination, if you need to moisten them again
use a mist spray to avoid disturbing any of the seeds.

Average germination time is 1-2 weeks in correct conditions.

Optimal germination temperatures required are between 22-26°C/72-79°F

If you cannot provide these temperatures outdoors, you will need to germinate them indoors and possibly use a heat mat.

Step 3
Seedlings can be transplanted if necessary once they have at
least 2 adult leaves, but make sure they feel strong enough to handle easily. If it is unnecessary leave them longer.

Space seedlings roughly 30 cm / 1 foot apart if
planting outdoors. Don’t over water during transplanting.

A shaded, bright location such as the morning sun
only is ideal if planning to grow them outdoors.

Pink Polka Dot plants will take 6 months to 2 years to flower. For optimal growth and a healthier plant it is best to remove flower buds as they appear. Hypoestes often looks a bit unsightly after it has finished putting all of its energy into flowering and the plant may gradually die off afterwards.

Feed monthly as an indoor plant.
