Growth

Leonurus cardiaca is a perennial herb that grows to a height of 1.2 metres (4 feet) and around 50cm (2 feet) wide. Motherwort’s natural habitat can be roadsides, vacant fields, waste grounds, rubbish dumps and other disturbed areas so it can become invasive and spread.

Often grown in containers in a part-shady location, Motherwort seedlings require just enough water to ensure the soil doesn’t dry out completely. Once established, plants become both drought and frost tolerant and can grow quickly throughout the warmer seasons.

Flowers appear in mid to late Summer and are pink to lilac in colour. The calyx of each flower is bell-shaped and has five lobes. Motherwort was first introduced into North America to increase honey production from bumblebees so the flowers will be of great attraction to pollinators.

When growing from seed, you can expect to start harvesting Motherwort leaves in around 90 days.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW LEONURUS CARDIACA (Motherwort)

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal. Cover very lightly so the seeds are exposed to sunlight as it is necessary for them to germinate.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 18-27°C / 65-80°F. Germination can take between 14-21 days.

Step 2

It is recommended to grow Motherwort in pots due to their invasive nature.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 10°C/50°F.

Keep moist but not too wet for the first week after transplanting.

Step 3

The final position should be in semi-shade. Once established, plants can tolerate cold temperatures down to -10°C/14°F.

The leaves of Motherwort can be harvested from around 90 days.
