Peppermint is a naturally formed hybrid plant that is a cross between Spearmint (Mentha spicata) and Watermint (Mentha aquatica). As much as it is useful, it is also widely regarded as a formidable weed. If left unchecked, Peppermint will quickly take over and dominate most plants.

As a medicinal herb, their is very few that match the scope of the Peppermint, in particular, its essential oil which has become a key ingredient in most herbal apothecary cabinets.

Growth

Mentha x piperita is a perennial herb that grows to a maximum height of around 90cm (3 feet) and a width of up to 50cm (20 inches). Peppermint generally grows well in moist, sunny or part-shade locations and can quickly take over by expanding with a network of underground rhizomes. Plants grow quickly with a reliable water source and with soil that drains quickly.

The rhizomes are fleshy and bear fibrous roots, while the leaves can be as large as 9cm (312 inches) long and have coarsely toothed margins. The leaves as well as the stems are slightly fuzzy and the summer flowers are purple with a four-lobed corolla.

Due to their invasive nature, it is advised to grow Peppermint in containers or well-bordered garden beds.

HOW TO GROW MENTHA x PIPERITA (Peppermint)

Step 1

Sow the seeds by 3mm deep in small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal. Growing Peppermint in pots or containers is recommended due to their invasive nature.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight until they have germinated.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 13-18°C / 55-65°F. Germination can take between 10-21 days.

Step 2

Once the seedlings have sprouted, move the container/s into a position of full sun for the morning and shade during the afternoon. After a two weeks it should be fine to leave them in a position of full sun for the afternoon as well, as long as the soil doesn’t dry out.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 5°C/41°F.

Keep well-watered for the first week after transplanting. Again, due to the invasive nature of Peppermint it is advised to keep them in pots or a well-structured garden bed.

Step 3

The final position should be in full sun unless the afternoon sun is extremely hot in summer.

Once established, Peppermint plants can tolerate cold temperatures down to -10°C/14°F.

The leaves of Peppermint can be ready to harvest within 4 weeks but it is advised to allow 90-100 days to allow the plant to develop properly.
