Growth

Thymus vulgaris is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows to a height of up to 30cm (12 inches) by around 40cm (16 inches) wide. Thyme is a highly aromatic plant that grows in poor soils, tolerates frost and once established doesn’t need much watering.

It is often grown in pots for convenience but Thyme can be a very useful companion plant in garden beds, especially near Broccoli and Cabbages. The beautiful clusters of purple and pink flowers in Summer also attract bees and butterflies which can increase the pollination rates of popular berries such as Raspberry and Blueberry. Though if leaves are going to be dried it is recommended to harvest them prior to the Summer flowering period.

When grown from seed, leaves can start being harvest from Thyme plants in around 80-120 days.

HOW TO GROW THYMUS VULGARIS (Thyme)

Step 1

Sow the seeds roughly 3mm deep in small pots or seedling trays filled with a well-draining soil. Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 15-22°C / 59-72°F. Germination can take between 14-21 days.

It is recommended to grow Thyme seedlings to a size that can be handled prior to transplanting into their permanent position. A height of around 10cm (4 inches) is ideal.

If transplanting young seedlings into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 10°C/50°F.

Ensure they are in a position of full sun where they can receive at least 6 hours of sun per day.

Step 3

Once established, plants can tolerate temperatures between -10-35°C / 14-95°F.

Thyme leaves can be ready to harvest within 80-120 days.
