Vaccinium virgatum ( Rabbiteye Blueberry ) is a deciduous, fruiting plant that is native to the south eastern United States, particular states such as Georgia and South Carolina. Unlike most Blueberry varieties, the Rabbiteye grows and fruits well in warmer climates. But they are remain frost tolerant and also produce the beautiful coloured leaves during Autumn.

Suitable for Temperate and Sub-Tropical climates.

Vaccinium virgatum is known by many common names including Swamp Blueberry, Southern Highbush Blueberry, Smallflower Blueberry and Southern Black Blueberry. It is native to most of the south-eastern states of USA from North Carolina down to Florida and as far west as Texas. The climates in these regions closely resemble those in Sydney and Brisbane as compared to the most Blueberry varieties which would prefer Tasmania, Melbourne or Canberra type environments.

Growth

Vaccinium virgatum is a deciduous woody shrub that can grow up to 4 metres (14 feet) tall by about 1 metre (3 feet) wide. Rabbiteye Blueberry thrives in acidic soils that remain moist but not boggy and enjoy a position in full sun. Plants are frost tolerant and although they don’t require much water, they produce more fruit if provided plenty during the Spring and Summer months.

Rabbiteye Blueberry is not self-fertile and requires two or more varieties of Rabbiteye Blueberry plants to pollinate, flower and to produce fruit. The Rabbiteye Blueberry seeds supplied here are harvested from a mix of Rabbiteye types to ensure our customers are able to achieve cross-pollination. They are pollinated by bees so growing plants nearby that are attract bees is highly recommended as it will increase fruit production.

Although the plants can begin to fruit within their second full season, commercial growers will often prune the flowers at this time to concentrate the shrubs energy into growing stronger roots and stems. This can increase the likelihood of producing good harvests from the third or fourth season.

The leaves of the Rabbiteye are spirally arranged, oblate to narrow elliptic and can grow to around 8cm (3 inches) long. During Autumn they go orange, red and then fall off to protect the plant over the colder months of Winter. Flowers are white, shaped like little bells and can be white or pink.

Due to their acidic soil loving nature, Blueberries suffer from few pests but their fruits are prized targets for birds.

FACTS ABOUT VACCINIUM VIRGATUM ( Rabbiteye Blueberry )

Blueberries were first commercially grown in Australia in 1974. The three main species used are Vaccinium corymbosum, Vaccinium angustifolia and Vaccinium virgatum. For colder climates, such as those in Victoria and Tasmania, Vaccinium corymbosum is chosen due to their high chill hour requirements.

Vaccinium virgatum and Vaccinium angustifolia is used commercially in Australia just north of Coffs Harbour in New South Wales and in some farms across northern NSW and southern Queensland.

Blueberries are well known as a superfood. They can be used in sauces and syrups as well as backed into pies, pancakes and muffins. Blueberries are highly nutritious as rich sources of Vitamins C & K and are a great source of antioxidants, dietary fibre, iron & manganese.

HOW TO GROW VACCINIUM VIRGATUM ( Rabbiteye Blueberry )

Step 1

Half fill a plastic zip-lock bag with a pre-moistened seed raising mix, sphagnum moss or peat moss (make sure none of these are too wet – if you can squeeze water out of it with your hand, it is too wet!), write the date on the bag, mix in the seeds loosely and place bag into the fridge for 12 weeks.

This process is called ‘cold stratification’ and is done to trick the seeds into believing they are going through a cold winter as they would in their natural habitat.

The seeds may not germinate if they have not been put through this process or germination rates will be lower & can take much longer.

Step 2

After 12 weeks, sow each seed about 3mm deep into seed trays of seed raising soil that is rich in organic matter. Moisten with a spray bottle to avoid over watering and then move into a well-lit but shaded location. A well-lit location is important as light affects germination of Vaccinium, however beware if placing in a sunny location as soil can dry out quickly.

Optimal temperature for germination is within the range of 15-20°C (59-68°F)

Temperatures above 27°C/80°C can cause seeds to go back into a dormant state but have been shown to have germination restart once temperatures dropped and stabilised back below 22°C/72°F.

If your temperatures are much lower at the time of year you are germinating blueberries, a heat mat may be necessary.

You can cover tray with plastic wrap to keep warmth and moisture inside the tray. Seeds should start to germinate between 6-12 weeks and can be sporadic, so don’t give up on any that haven’t sprouted until after 12 weeks!

Step 3

Once seedlings are looking strong, they can be moved to a sunnier location but be careful doing this in warmer months. If you need to do this, do it slowly so that seedlings have the time to adjust.

Seedlings can be transplanted once they reach 10cm (4 inches) in height into a good quality, nutrient rich soil. Blueberries need an acidic soil to thrive, anywhere between 4.5-5.5 is acceptable.

Keep in a small-medium pot until after first winter, so they can be moved inside if needed to protect them from frost and cold winds at this time.

Seedlings can be fertilised monthly with a weak organic fertiliser.

Step 4

Transplant to final position after last frost has passed, when the plants are between 1-2 years old. If planting more than one, space 1.5m apart/5 feet.

Again, be aware not to bring the soil to a too alkaline level. Using organic matter such as compost, food scraps, coffee grounds & manure are good organic ways of improving your soil.

During winter plants will often die back and wait until spring to regrow. Rabbiteye Blueberries will survive cold temperatures down to -10°C/14°F.

Additional water advised when fruiting which is usually around early to mid-summer.

Rabbiteye Blueberry plants usually begin fruiting at 2 years of age or during their second full growing season.
